Running a Small Business

August is napping, Roman is at his cousins for the night, and we are getting ready to head to Alabama for my brother’s playoff football game! Today is Small Business Saturday and I feel like it constitutes a post…. even for nothing more than saying Thank You. Without all of you I wouldn’t be allowed to do what I love. I swear my clients/friends trusting in me with such big moments means a lot to me and for my family for that matter. When you buy local and small you are putting kids in sports and food on the table. Seriously.

I run a small business. When you own a small business you are the head of accounting, marketing, production, operations, cleaninglist goes on and on. Running a small business is one of the hardest yet most rewarding “jobs” I have ever done. It will sound stupid, but getting to clean my small business area with specialist cleaning supplies is actually really rewarding; my office is always so clean! Photographing people is probably only 20% of what I do. Seriously! I have a photography business and running it continuities in only taking pictures about 20% of the time. The rest is editing, album designing, orders, client communication, bookkeeping, meetings, forecasting, blogging, marketing, and the list goes on and on.

Other small business owners get that when you work for yourself you spend 50 plus hours a week working at random times but the key is you are doing what you love so to me it is not really work at all. I LOVE running a small business. My formal education is in business finance and everyone thinks wow you really use you degree with photography don’t you. Truth is I use my degree everyday. If someone told me that they wanted to be a photographer when they grow up, I would tell them to go to business school not photography.

I am thankful I get to do what I love, I am thankful I get to set my own hours, and I get to work doing what I love and still be “Mom” at home. So today make sure instead of shopping at the big corporate stores pay attention to all the small stores, shops, and companies in your local community. Because I can guarantee you the owners of the small business are doing what they are because they love it. šŸ™‚

And because a post is WAYYY better with a picture… a little sneak peek of Staci and Luke’s engagement session. Sigh…. do you see what I mean…. running my small business kinda rocks!
