Invest in Yourself

I typically choose to keep my opinions to myself… okay for the people that really know me, not all the time I know… šŸ˜‰

In lite of all the recent craziness in the photography industry about how to start a photography business and all these 10 step advices here and there, I have just watched people go back and forth. To be completely honest I am to busy and have other priorities than to worry about everyone else and what he said or she said. I say focus on yourself and your clients.

More importantly.. invest in yourself. Before you go buy a camera and open up a facebook page stating that you have a photography business…. seriously invest in yourself. What does that mean? One word…. Education. Go to workshops, take classes, and attend events. Take time to understand how to use a camera in manual, what aspects of a camera come together to make an image, what will my workflow be, post production, what software will I learn and use, how to run a photography business, marketing, how to pay sales tax, what situation happen in a wedding and how to handle them, … list goes on…. Because our clients deserve the best.

Once you have done that… then get a business license and run a business. I get the email daily asking how to do this and I see images popping up everywhere from new photographers.

I am not here to judge… period. I was once a new photographer. We all were, I don’t care if you started 20 years ago. I say let’s stop the noise and invest that time in yourself and your business. And there is my two cents… any I realize my 2 cents is not much.
I was in Washington DC a couple of weeks ago and I snapped this image at sunset. I am thankful that photography has given me a voice that I didn’t have before and has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Have a great weekend Friends!

    Kristy,

Great point, all-in-all, you cannot go wrong when you take the time to educate yourself. Maybe I’m a geek and just love to learn but I honestly think that if you stay curious and keep looking to learn, you will eventually find success – however you define it šŸ™‚ Thanks for the 2 cents, but it’s your 2 cents, plus mine plus about a gazillion other’s 2 cents that matter.

    Thanks again!

It’s nice to see other another business professional who feels the same way as me! This is a huge issue that goes on in the hair and makeup industry as well. To many licensed cosmetologists feel that once they pass the state board exam they now know everything and no longer need to continue to expand on their education. Trends are constantly changing and new techniques are being developed daily. It’s our jobs as professionals to be able to provide our clients these things and the only way to do that is by continuously educating yourself! I could continue to go on about this for awhile but I’ll spare everyone and step off my soap box now lol šŸ˜› I greatly enjoyed your two cents on this subject Kristy šŸ™‚

Thanks Pesh! And Katie thanks for mentioning that it brings up a good point! It happens in every industry. Every business. People must adapt and change in order to keep their business strong. And the people that don’t establish a good "business" will never do it longterm.
