Uplift Standing Desk

If you’ve been keeping up with all my recent posts, you know that I’ve once again moved my office to the 1926 farmhouse. I just knew in my gut that was the best decision for me in all aspects. Because not only is it going to be a space for me and my team, but for other small businesses. A place to collaborate and rent out in the future, and even host workshops! Since I wanted this new office space to feel as creative as possible, I wanted to create a desk that was functional. A place for my team to gather around with me. I also am big on health. In December, I hurt my back doing CrossFit. I knew sitting at work all the time was playing a big part in that! So this allows me to change it up!

Of course, like normal, I also get myself into things where I am in over my head too! I have wanted the perfect walnut slab for years.

Uplift

Know that this post is in no way sponsored by Uplift. It’s a desk where you can stand and raise (lift) to the height you need it to be! Plus Uplift has add-on features where you can really get techy with it!

The Wood

I found this absolutely stunning piece of wood and I knew this was my piece!

To save myself some time and money, I decided to refinish it myself. A friend encouraged me to do it myself. So I can’t do this post without thanking Michael. He used to refinish gun stock and advised me on how and what to use! I would have used and done everything wrong. He also was extremely picky and hard on me when it was not perfect either and I would have to continue sanding! lol.

The Work

If you know me, you know I am a perfectionist. Embarking on refinishing something myself was going to be a task. Here is what I can say, and I am not sure I was even going to say this… But on this desk are my tears, my frustrations, my hard work, and even my pride. It was many early mornings and late nights in my thoughts, in music, and just working it out. Every time I thought I had it perfect and done, I would seem to find more lines that needed my love and attention. I walked away exhausted and frustrated so many times… rested and came back renewed and excited to keep going.
I have spent probably 20-25 hours sanding, wetting, raising the grain with a torch, and sanding again. It was circle sanded, so I had to get out all the lines and that sounds easy, but it is not. At all. Starting with lower grit paper and working your way up.

The Base

I am SO proud I did this. I even built the base and installed it with the help of my 11-year-old. Something 4 years ago I would have never done and instead just asked for help or hired it out. I think I was meant to work it out, work on it, and work on myself. Perhaps to stand strongly on this desk with a different type of power that would not have been felt otherwise. With much love my new desk!!!
