European Industrial with Splash of Modern Basement

Let me start by saying this basement is not done and a lot of shelves still have nothing on it, walls that are still bare, but if I wait until it is perfect and done… guess what I will never post pictures! 🙂 I am a detailed orientated gal so this was a much bigger project that I originally anticipated….. Or maybe it was that I made it that way! 🙂 When you are doing something like this though, I have learned don’t skip corners and take your time… or you will regret it later!

Such a fun project that I really enjoyed doing! This is a creative outlet for me that I LOVE doing! I love decorating, shopping, thrifting, DIYing, antiquing, and designing. Basically in a nut shell my husband says I love to spend money but that isn’t true! 😉 Well….. maybe true… but you get my point. 🙂 Some of my FAVORITE things about the basement didn’t even cost much at all! Things like the random door that we found at an antique market, the DIY wood ceiling, or the brick wall in the kitchen made out of brick slabs…. all things that didn’t cost a left kidney. If you have any questions about how something was… give me a holla(drop a comment below) and I will try to help! Huge thanks to Leah and Deborah who are both friends of mine and two fun, creative, crafty ladies that had a huge part in pulling this space all together.

So much with our home has changed since I originally posted our pictures so I also need to go through and do an updated post as well for some varies DIY projects I have done! But for now here is the basement project “almost” done. 🙂

Here is a before picture! It was studded up but we wanted to rework some rooms. Grant Custom works, did such an amazing job with all the woodworking! The rest of our home has curved doorways so we got creative and decided to carry that down into the basement! We also built some fake walls to house the duct work so we wouldn’t have to loose any ceiling height or have any treys in the ceiling.

Everyone that walks into our home is surprised to know we even have a basement. It is all under ground so we wanted so we wanted to stick with the European style of our home yet make it cozy as well…. yet with a splash of industrial and modern to bring our own taste into it. So this is the entrance below!

Wall Paint Colors:
White run color is Sherwin Williams SW 6385 Dover White
Wine Room color is Sherwin Williams SW7048 Urban Bronze

The floors are the slab of our home… Let me say that again… The floor is polished concrete with nothing on it, only buffed! I love it and so easy to upkeep!

We have one big open room. To the right is our entertainment area.

And too the left is kitchenette/bar area.

So the beams are from an old manufacturing plant in New York. We found them from a company that buys and resells aged wood. We had three huge beams and cut them in half to have more pieces and to also save head space. In between the beams is 10 inch wide plank boards. Are upstairs floors are wide planked so we wanted to carry that over. We gray washed them and also gave them a splash of warm stain in different areas to have more depth. I say we… but I should say my husband. Let me tell you my husband stained boards for days… for days! 🙂 I was pregnant when we were doing this so I just watched from a distance and delegated. 😉

On the left…. Nesting table from Home Goods…. Score!

Couch from Restoration Hardware. Yes that cost an arm and a leg, but this is a timeless piece that I really feel like we will use forever! Movie night, kids having friends over, etc. Rug from West Elm, and Cowhide Ottomans from Arhaus.

Scored this fun jug at an antique store for $7 bucks! Cowhide pillow from Arhaus and Grey accent pillow from Crate and Barrel.

Kitchenette/Bar area. We didn’t want it to be just a “bar”. We wanted it to be a table we could use for family game night, crafts, wrapping presents, pizza night, etc. We wanted the space to be a functional for our family and our life. So instead we did a bar height table, then just did wine fridge, refrigerator combo, and then a under-counter ice fridge.

Oh and look in the hallway… see that baby rocker??? I attempted to duck and hide any mess for the photos but obviously I failed in some areas! 🙂

We had a section of leftover ceiling beam. So we decided to make it into two shelves that would float on the walls! The brick wall is just brick slabs hung up and then painted white! It makes it look very clean yet rustic. I just love how it all turned out!

As you can see from this picture. All the mortar is messed up and not perfect! That makes it look like an old wall that has been there forever and I was just repurposing it! 🙂 Perfect for all the wine and beer glasses. Picture on the right…. yep I need more wine! 🙂

Rusty Smith built these cabinet that I sketched out on a piece of paper and they are way more beautiful than I ever imagined! My brother Justin killed that poor deer that I am now using as decor. 🙂 #southerndecor

The artwork on the wall is from a friend and fellow photographer Tricia Whitmer! She took a trip to Europe and I love how it brought color, warmth, and imagery to the room!

This door right here was the inspiration for the basement! I found this door at Scott’s Antique market along with one other door. I bought it not knowing I where I would use it but knowing I just had to have it….. SOOOOO glad I did!

Check out the floor here as well. We had a couple areas that were cracked so we decided to fill it in and just make it look repaired! Totally adds to the character of the floors and overall style of the decor! Broken is not always a bad thing! 🙂

All stone work was done by my Dad, Mark Gayton Stone Masonry, of course I am a little biased but he is detailed oriented like myself and I am so happy with how everything turned out.

Clock was another antique find. It is old, heavy, and big but I loved it and something that I didn’t buy and first. Then couldn’t stop thinking about it so I went back and bought! Only buy pieces that you love and moves you in a certain way!

Inside the doors we have what we call our “wine room.” Also known as mommy’s escape room.

A friend and fellow photographer Kenny Kim regularly takes trip to Europe! He has some beautiful images from his trips so I decided to get a couple printed on canvas, I then shipped it to him, got him to sign them, and then he shipped them on to me. Love authentic artwork!

Stone Archway. Wall scones, light fixture, and leather chairs are all from Restoration Hardware. 🙂

We also had a custom wine shelf made for the wine room.

At the end of the hallway that is where the other custom door is!

Full bathroom in the basement. Love me some white subway tile… so decided to just do the whole wall! 🙂 Vanity is Restoration Hardware and so are the lights!

Aren’t old doors just amazing! I would love to know all the history. What lives have walked through these doors before.

This is the kids playroom in the basement. A lot of this was August old flying decorations that we just decided to move to the playroom space.

We also left one room in the basement unfinished for storage! If you have questions give me a holla! A lot of projects to cover so I figured I would post the basement with everything and could break down posts with different questions if needed! Happy decorating! Wine anyone? 🙂
